![]() ![]() LAN is a department within the Lego Group that helps facilitate communication between the company and AFOLs across the globe. LAN: This stands for Lego Ambassador Network.LUG: This is the acronym for Lego User Group-meaning a bunch of AFOLs (a bucket of AFOLs? a drawerful of AFOLs?) who get together to build socially.I thought we were supposed to get creative! Illegal build: This refers to forcing Lego pieces together in ways they’re not intentionally designed to fit, like wedging a tile between studs so that one stands perpendicular to the other.I’ve yet to open my new Dinosaur Fossils 21320, but I plan to skip the included instructions and go straight to this incredible dragon skeleton created by user Janotechnic (the how-to PDF costs about only $8). Alternate build: This refers to independently sold instructions that show how to build something completely new using only Lego pieces from a single set.AFOL variations: Some variations include TFOL (Teen Fan of Lego), AFFOL (Adult Female Fan of Lego), GayFOL (Gay Fan of Lego). For a deeper dive into the language of Lego, read this detailed glossary to learn about things like rainbow warriors and greebling, words I fully plan to use incorrectly the next time I get the munchies after a gay pride parade. During my research and interviews, I learned several terms I’d never heard before, and you’ll see several mentioned throughout this piece. ![]() Many acronyms and phrases get tossed around in the AFOL community. (But not Lego Friends-those you have to buy.) The Lego lexicon But if, like me, you’ve found yourself falling deeper into the world of Lego, consider this a primer on how to build a better collection and make friends along the way. None of the info I dug up will be new to an experienced AFOL. I set out to become a better AFOL-the official term for an Adult Fan of Lego-and along the way I discovered many more acronyms, like-minded communities, buying hacks, storage and resale tips, and even free software for virtual building. I don’t want to be this person though, so I decided it was time to embrace the more-inclusive and imaginative side of my hobby. I revel in the feeling of control Lego provides, but does that make me the villain in The Lego Movie? A grown-up who freaks out if a child tries to play with my displays? I don’t have kids of my own, but I’ve already picked out a few “distraction sets” to hand off to my friends’ young’uns so they’ll stay away from the more-elaborate builds in my office. But not because I was buying toys-I worried that I wasn’t being creative enough. I don’t have kids of my own, but I’ve already picked out a few “distraction sets” to hand off to my friends’ young’uns so they’ll stay away from my more-elaborate builds.Īs Lego boxes continued to pile up in my home over the past year, a sense of shame crept in. Lego has excellent resale value, so I convinced myself that each purchase was an investment, as well as therapy and a reality diversion all rolled into one pretty, rattly package. Until the pandemic, when the halt in traveling or dining out or even buying clothes suddenly left me with some extra funds to begin building a collection big enough that storage became an issue. ![]() But I considered myself a casual collector at best. In addition to Star Wars sets, I also adored anything with a spooky theme, like the Monster Fighters series and the Scooby-Doo line. And from then on I’d pick up a couple of new releases each year for the memory trip. 1 That specific licensing, combined with the soothing nature of building the sets, was a double dopamine hit of nostalgia for this ’80s kid. Like many Gen Xers, I rediscovered my childhood love of Lego when the company began releasing Star Wars–themed sets back in 1999.

I didn't know this was Sib behaviour and I've made so many of my own keyboard shortcuts I wonder if this is the norm? Oddly enough, as I'm testing moving up a stave (lower staff all in Vc 1) using Ctrl/Alt + Up Arrow, Voice 2 is being chosen (upper staff in Voices 1 and 2) instead of Voice 1 in the upper staff. Shift and Tab moves to the previous object. > On a separate note, I think that you can benefit more by using the ‘TAB’ key, rather than the ’N’ key when starting to input notes.>Īs Jim says, ‘TAB’ moves to the next object. Posted by Richard Vitale - 12 May 01:39PM (edited 12 May 01:41PM) ![]() In any event, If the goal is to eliminate the mouse as much as possible, then I think the 'Tab' key has a big advantage over the 'N' key for this kind of approach. Or perhaps you're using your midi keyboard for note input. the Tab key selects the bar rest as it's object, and from there you can quickly key in the pitch via keyboard shortcuts. which is a nice shortcut for moving to the start of the next measure (or previous measure if you happened to use the left arrow instead). But to help out with this issue you can always jump across measures by using. This could also be seen as a disadvantage of course - if you didn’t want to go to whatever measure is in the upper left-hand corner of your monitor. The main advantage of this is that you’re instantly inside a measure ready to input notes, and you don’t have to reach for the mouse in order to select a location point to place the input cursor (as you would when using the ’N’ key, for the Note Input function). Tab is the default keyboard shortcut for ‘Select Next Object’, and if nothing is already selected, pressing it will get Sibelius to select whatever the first object is in your score, as it appears on your monitor - referenced from the upper left-hand corner. On a separate note, I think that you can benefit more by using the ‘TAB’ key, rather than the ’N’ key when starting to input notes. The keyboard shortcut for jumping between voices on the same staff is. Posted by Jim Druckenmiller - 12 May 04:30AM (edited 12 May 09:28AM) Then I want to choose another keystroke command that puts me in Voice 2, from where I can arrow to the right to the vacant beat three to enter the voice 2 note. I want to use the control alt G command to choose bar five. Bar five has two beats of notes in to of rest in Voice 2. Inbar six, you have notes all in Voice 1. Let us try one more example let us imagine that Inbar five of the score, you have notes both in voices one and two. Unfortunately, if you are in a score with only one staff, you don't have this approach from below option with the control alt up and down arrow keys. ![]() In the case where you wanted to get into the Voice 2 staff and there were notes in the bar you were in, followed by,little say, seven bars in Voice 1 before the next appearance of notes in Voice 2., a right arrow would skip these bars. In that case, you would be in Voice 2 in the new staff, and you could arrow to the right through the voice to notes until you got to the place where you wanted to enter new notes. What I want is to approach the voice the way you would if you were coming from the staff below using CTRL ALT UP ARROW. I understand how to make this work by choosing the letter N, followed by Alt # for the voice you want. If that's not clear or I've explained incorrectly please post back. In other words there has to be something in between beat one and four and Sibelius logically recognizes the "rest". Sibelius requires you to insert the half note rest first, in order to move from beat one to beat four in that particular bar. Now that the rest has been laid down you can skate around voice 1 or 2 (choose a note or rest in THAT voice first) and use the left/right arrow keys. ![]() So, let's say you want to enter a quarter note on beat one, 2 beats rest (beats two and three), and a quarter note on the 4th beat of a bar in 4/4.Īfter typing N, followed by Alt2, enter your quarter note, then push the number 5 on your keyboard keypad for "half note" and push the number "0" on your keypad which will enter a half note rest, then push number "4" on your keypad (for quarter note) and enter your note. Simply type N, followed by Alt2, and you can immediately begin inserting notes in Voice 2. it will change the the voice of the note that is selected. IDrive is good enough if you aren’t using them too often, but if you need to sync or share files regularly, Dropbox is the better choice. If you're looking for a refresh of the franchise or wanting to get an adrenaline rush before seeing "The Equalizer 3," here are all the movies and TV shows in the beloved franchise. In 2014, Denzel Washington dazzled the screen in Antoine Fuquas film The Equalizer, based on the 1980s TV series of the same name. Unlike the previous films in the Equalizer film series, "The Equalizer 3" moves Washington's McCall out of Boston to Southern Italy to take on one of his most threatening adversaries yet - the Sicilian Mafia. The original show premiered in 1985 and starred Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a former covert operations officer turned private detective who uses his specialized training and skills to solve the problems of his clients and bring perpetrators to justice.Īfter the first "Equalizer" TV series ended in 1989, it inspired the 2014 film adaptation with Washington, as well as the reboot series featuring Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a woman version of the famous vigilante. 1, Denzel Washington is returning to the big screen as Robert McCall in the action-packed "The Equalizer 3." The film, which also stars Dakota Fanning, is the third installment of the film series featuring Washington and the fifth in the Equalizer franchise, which includes the 19 TV shows. A raft of subplots don’t really go anywhere or serve any purpose, the main story is incredibly thin, and the limited action sequences do little to balance the books. It's been nearly five years since "The Equalizer 2" hit theaters, and on Sept. A sequel was released on July 20, 2018, with Washington and Fuqua returning. The Equalizer 2 isn’t a terrible film, but it is quite a boring one. The Equalizer is a 2014 American vigilante action thriller film, loosely based on the 1980s TV series of the same name. On Netflix it has an 18 icon, so I guess it’s also the uncut version, should that concern you either way.) The 4K Blu-ray release is uncut and rated 18 (presumably so they could just port the disc rather than having to faff with edits/a new transfer). Witness his transformation from a solitary avenger to an unstoppable force, fighting ruthless adversaries from Russian gangsters to the Italian mafia in this heart. (FYI, the film was cut in the UK to get a 15 certificate, removing some of the more extreme gore (insides hanging out, a spine being severed, etc). Denzel Washington is Robert McCall, an ex-assassin with a mysterious past, who returns to action to serve vengeance for the exploited and oppressed. However, I did not realise that flour could be explosive, but turns out it can, so in that sense at least this was educational for me. It’s a nice concept and it’s solidly executed, but it’s an at-most 20-minute sequence and it’s not exceptional, just a lot more engaging than the film’s other 100 minutes, so it doesn’t really justify sitting through the rest of the movie. It’s not as memorable as the Taken one (though the final line lands), but at least it’s a moment of drama and the film perks up after it - but by then we’re well over an hour in to a less-than-two-hours movie.įrom there it’s a short hop, skip and jump to a climax set amidst a horrendous storm in an abandoned seaside town. That reveal leads to a wannabe- Taken-phone-speech declaration from Denzel, which should’ve come a lot earlier. At least it doesn’t try to save it for the end, I guess. The first film was noteworthy for investing more time in its supporting characters than is typical for the action-thriller genre, but this one takes that notion to extremes.Įven when the main plot does get moving, it takes over an hour to get to a ‘twist’ that’s obvious just from reading the cast list. I’m not here for a pleasant drama about a Lyft driver who does kindly things for others - I want to see Denzel Washington kicking the asses of nasty buggers. ![]() As a result of them, it’s… so… slow… To start with, the subplots are a couple of small ‘cases’ introduced in the first half-hour, presumably to try to liven the film up because the main storyline is crawling along. Sony has revealed new footage for The Equalizer 3.A follow-up to 2018’s The Equalizer 2, The Equalizer 3 will see Denzel Washington return to action as Robert McCall. While not much has been disclosed about the movie, the highly-anticipated action movie is slated to release on September 1, 2023. I mention the subplots there because they’re the film’s biggest problem. This time, an array of subplots eventually gives way to a story in which McCall sets out to avenge the murder of a friend. Instead, what we get is an action-thriller where both the action and thrills are, literally, few and far between.įor those who skipped the first film, Denzel is playing Robert McCall, a former Marine and intelligence agent who retired to a life of inconspicuous normality, but has been tempted back into righting some of the wrongs of the world - or “equalizing” them, I guess. The film would be about 50% better if he did. ![]() Sadly, that is not a line Denzel actually says in this movie. ![]() A similar color separation seen from thin layers of oil (or gasoline, etc.) on water, known as iridescence, is not caused by diffraction from a grating but rather by thin film interference from the closely stacked transmissive layers. ![]() Decorative patterned plastic films based on reflective grating patches are inexpensive and commonplace. Diffraction colors also appear when one looks at a bright point source through a translucent fine-pitch umbrella fabric covering. A usual diffraction grating has parallel lines (It is true for 1-dimensional gratings, but 2 or 3-dimensional gratings are also possible and they have their applications such as wavefront measurement), while a CD has a spiral of finely spaced data tracks. Rainbow-like colors from closely spaced narrow tracks on optical data storage disks such as CDs or DVDs are an example of light diffraction caused by diffraction gratings. Rogers (1804–1882) took over the lead and, by the end of the 19th century, the concave gratings of Henry Augustus Rowland (1848–1901) were the best available.Ī diffraction grating can create "rainbow" colors when it is illuminated by a wide-spectrum (e.g., continuous) light source. Gratings with the lowest line distance (d) were created, in the 1860s, by Friedrich Adolph Nobert (1806–1881) in Greifswald then the two Americans Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816–1892) and William B. Using these principles, Fraunhofer was the first to use a diffraction grating to obtain line spectra and the first to measure the wavelengths of spectral lines with a diffraction grating. ![]() The principles of diffraction were discovered by Thomas Young and Augustin-Jean Fresnel. This was similar to notable German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer's wire diffraction grating in 1821. The first man-made diffraction grating was made around 1785 by Philadelphia inventor David Rittenhouse, who strung hairs between two finely threaded screws. James Gregory (1638–1675) observed the diffraction patterns caused by a bird feather, which was effectively the first diffraction grating (in a natural form) to be discovered, about a year after Isaac Newton's prism experiments. Some gratings modulate the phases of incident waves rather than the amplitude, and these types of gratings can be produced frequently by using holography. ![]() Such a grating modulates the amplitude of an incident wave to create a diffraction pattern. Because of this, diffraction gratings are commonly used in monochromators and spectrometers, but other applications are also possible such as optical encoders for high-precision motion control and wavefront measurement.įor typical applications, a reflective grating has ridges or rulings on its surface while a transmissive grating has transmissive or hollow slits on its surface. The grating acts as a dispersive element. The directions or diffraction angles of these beams depend on the wave (light) incident angle to the diffraction grating, the spacing or distance between adjacent diffracting elements (e.g., parallel slits for a transmission grating) on the grating, and the wavelength of the incident light. The emerging coloration is a form of structural coloration. In optics, a diffraction grating is an optical grating with a periodic structure that diffracts light into several beams traveling in different directions (i.e., different diffraction angles).
